Hidden in the rolling hills outside Trenton is this county park where you can step back in time to learn about farm life at the turn of the 20th century. My kids loved visiting because instead of just watching, all of the activities are hands-on.
Dating to 1732, Howell Farm was donated to the county in 1974 and today is a living history farm run as it was pre-industrialization using manual labor and horse power.
2023’s Event schedule:

During the ice harvest you haul and cut ice. During corn planting you help drive the horses pulling the plow. During a corn harvest field trip we made the butter we slathered on our freshly baked cornbread. There is also a craft project for each event.
The park is open Tuesday-Saturday, so even if it’s not an event day you can walk around the farm admiring the pre-Civil War era buildings and meet the animals (a staff member is available to introduce you and answer questions).

You may even see the workers in action:

For an edible souvenir, check out the small gift shop which sells products harvested from the farm (pick up a recipe card – the corn muffins are yummy!):

And, it’s free!
Great field trips!!
