Just north of New Orleans lies Lake Pontchartrain. Technically an estuary since it connects with the Gulf of Mexico, Lake Pontchartrain is the second largest inland saltwater body in the United States and covers about 630 square miles. Running through its center is the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, a 24 mile bridge that is the world’s longest continuous bridge over water. The drive across takes about 20 minutes, and for part of that time you are completely out of view of land.

Once you reach the far side it’s about a 15 minute drive to Abita Springs, home of the Abita Mystery House.

It’s outdoor spaces and buildings are full of funky oddities, including a collection of paint-by-numbers and press button dioramas:
