One of the benefits of being an Ivy League school is having alumni capable of funding a world class art museum.

Although it’s not huge, it has EVERYTHING:
Monet Japanese bridge? Check

Georgia O’Keefe? Check

Chinese Tomb Guardian? Check

African ceremonial hunting vest? Check

Warhol? Check

Roman Mosaics? Check

Contemporary social commentary? Check

Formally established in 1882, the museum was created to provide study objects for the new Department of Art and Archaeology. The museum was active in the effort to protect European art during WWII, and two of the Monuments Men served as directors of the museum.
Located in the center of the gorgeous Princeton campus, the museum is always free. It’s also a great museum for introducing kids to art. In addition to the kid friendly objects on display, they hold special family art making programs.
While walking the campus, make sure to check out the outdoor sculpture. There are over 2 dozen large-scale sculptures by artists including Picasso, Moore, Calder and Lipchitz. Free tours are given Saturday and Sunday, where guests are encouraged to touch, stand on, and interact with the pieces. No sign-up necessary.
