Of all the places to listen to an organ concert, a Macy’s department store probably isn’t the first place to pop into your mind. Yes – the world’s largest fully functioning pipe organ is not in a church, it’s right here in Philadelphia. There’s no seating – the best you can do is sit on the floor, squeezed into an alcove in the girl’s clothing section. Yet, everyday at noon you can listen to a FREE concert played on the world’s largest organ by a master organist.
Opened in 1911, and dedicated by President Taft, Wanamaker’s was the first department store in Philadelphia – and one of the first in the country. On the National Register of Historic Places, the interior of building is gorgeous.
