Everywhere else in the world it’s called Italian ice. In Philly and south Jersey it’s called water ice. Whatever you want to call it, this is the place to try it. There are water ice places everywhere (Rita’s is a popular local chain), but John’s is different. Since 1945, John’s has been making water ice using just sugar, water, and fruit, and serves just 4 flavors – classic cherry and lemon, plus chocolate and pineapple. Occasionally, they have specials – such strawberry in late spring. What makes it different from other places is the sweetness level. Most water ice is super sweet. John’s is sweet, but it still has a tartness that makes it refreshing on a hot Philly summer day. Plus, a small is only $2!

Looks delicious! I can’t stand Rita’s – my brother and I both got violently ill after eating the “cream ice” at a location they used to have in NE Ohio, and they denied responsibility, even though it was the only thing we had both eaten in the right time frame beforehand. So gross.
