The place to be on a Saturday morning in Philly is in a line that snakes along a back street in South Philadelphia, waiting to get into the back door kitchen/retail area of Mighty Bread, a mainly wholesale operation that sells the best baked goods to the public once a week. Their specialty is sourdough bread, which they offer along with seasonal toasts and other specialties once a week (check Instagram for the updated schedule, since post-Covid they are sometimes open an additional day and occasionally offer other specialties, like pizza).

Their other baked goods (think donuts, soft pretzels, cookies) are also stellar. The selection changes weekly. If you’re lucky, you can snag one of the half dozen tables in the little court yard. Otherwise, eat your treats in the park around the corner.

Tip: The loaves freeze great, especially if you pre-slice them before freezing.
