The best part Athens is not exploring the ancient remains of democracy’s birthplace or the delicious food… it’s the tortoises!

For a busy city it’s surprising how often you come across these little guys. Our first encounter was looking down into a park and seeing about a half dozen wandering among the ruins, bathing in the sun, and munching grass.

From then on we kept an eye out as we criss-crossed the city.

They love the dry sandy soil which is perfect for digging holes to escape the heat.

Depending on the temperature they could be enjoying a sun bath or hiding in the shade.

Of course, you shouldn’t disturb any encountered in your wanderings, but they are popular pets. My daughter made friends with this little guy (girl?) who lived on the terrace of a villa in Corfu.

Finding them is usually no problem, but bonus points if you can photograph one with ruins in the background!
