No longer do you have to spend your Saturday mornings in a line that snakes along a back street in South Philadelphia, waiting to get into the back door kitchen/retail area of Mighty Bread- they now have a storefront in the building adjacent to their kitchen. Mighty Bread’s specialty is sourdough, which they offer as seasonal toasts and sandwiches, along with other baked goods, plus a great coffee (and other seasonal drinks, like fresh lemonade and spiced cider). Nice seating area, plus a selection of unique grocery items.
Top photo shows one of the best ways to try a variety of their breads – the bread and butter special with house-made butter and jam. This is from a more recent trip:

Bottom photos are from our Saturday morning adventures back when they were only open once/week.

Their other baked goods (think donuts, soft pretzels, cookies) are also stellar. The selection rotates.

Tip: The loaves freeze great, especially if you pre-slice them before freezing. We bought 4 loafs on our last trip! Tobey’s favorite is the jalapeño cheddar. Mine is the brioche.

Bread is probably my favourite food, followed closely by pizza and doughnuts, so I’m sure I’d love this place. There’s a bakery in London I’ve always wanted to visit that has a bread buffet and toasters on all the tables, so you can go slice whatever bread you want and toast it to order. It’s stupid I know, since it’s way more expensive than just buying a whole loaf of bread and making toast at home, but I just love the idea of unlimited self-serve toast with a variety of breads. They probably don’t even do it anymore because of Covid though.

I’m not sure why toasts seem so much more tasty and exotic than a sandwich??!!
